The PlayStation Recap — Viva Vita Edition

From: feedproxy.google.com

The big day is almost here! This Wednesday (or Tuesday night) sees the launch of PS Vita -- the most powerful and versatile handheld gaming machine on the planet. PS Vita's imminent launch stirs up some powerful memories for me, including January of 2011 when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. revealed NGP ("Next Generation Portable") to a small group of journalists in Tokyo, and the night of PlayStation's E3 2011 press conference when Kaz Hirai announced that PS Vita's $249 to $299 retail price -- a shocking development at the time, as many analysts and editors were predicting a price closer to $399. Time flies, and it's hard to believe that PS Vita's long gestation process is nearly complete. But it's so exciting to see PS Vita making its way into the wild for the first time and hear first impressions from early adopters enjoying the launch lineup. If you're picking up PS Vita next week, be sure to tell us whether you're getting a 3G/Wi-fi system or a Wi-Fi system, as well as what games and accessories you're thinking of buying! Japanese hardware sales, January 30 - February 5: Love song edition

We talk a lot of trash about Valentine's Day because it's hilarious and easy, but in all honesty, there's nothing wrong with two people using the greeting-card holiday as an excuse to express their love for each other. To make up for our maliciousness, we want to help facilitate that lovin' by providing some nice background music for your romantic evening.

Start off the night with the acoustic cover of Skrillex's Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites by Bear Cavalry embedded above. Once things get a little cozy, follow that up with this piano version of Intuition by Feist, and when the moment is right, throw on Glory Box by Portishead to shift the mood into overdrive. Leave that on repeat for as long as necessary, and then bring things back down with Bjork's All Is Full of Love. Now, get a room you two!

Namco Bandai profits up in Q3 2012, as are year-end projections

From: www.joystiq.com

Namco Bandai's financial statement for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 has been released, and while the report contains a lot of tables and numbers and figures, it actually has very few pictures, which was a problem for our exceedingly limited attention spans. We did our best, though, and after concentrating really hard and taking our Adult ADD medication, we were able to produce actual, honest-to-goodness business information.

For instance! For the 9 month period ending on December 31, 2011, Namco Bandai reports a net income (which is the amount of earned money left over after all operating expenses and taxes) of ¥16.3 billion, or about $210 million, which is a 34.3 percent increase over the same period last year.

The company predicts an additional ¥2.19 billion ($28.3 million) in net income over the course of Q4, (which runs from January 1 to March 31, 2012), wrapping up fiscal 2012 to the tune of ¥18.5 billion ($238.4 million) in net profit over the course of the fiscal year. Provided these predictions stand the test of time, Namco Bandai's performance in fiscal 2012 will be a 90 percent increase over its performance in fiscal 2011.

Whew! Now if you'll excuse us, we have cat videos to watch.

US game retail industry tanks in January - NPD

From: www.gamespot.com

New physical channel sales fall 34 percent to $750.6 million; Xbox 360 leads hardware, Modern Warfare 3 tops software.

The US retail game industry has taken its first step into 2012, and it appears to have resulted in a broken ankle. Today, the NPD Group reported dismal January retail sales, with total consumer spend in the US falling 34 percent to $750.6 million.

"One factor for the double digit declines in new physical software was the lack of new launches. New launches in January 2011 represented 13 percent of dollar sales and new launch performance dropped 99 percent in Jan 2012. Games like Dead Space 2, Little Big Planet 2, and DC Universe Online ranked within the top ten last year," commented NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

New software sales for console, portable, and PC games fell 37 percent during the month to $379.6 million. However, NPD did note that it expects sales outside the new physical channel, such as full-game and add-on downloads, social games, subscriptions, and rentals, brought in and additional $350 million to $400 million in January.

The top game of 2011 maintained its No. 1 position, as Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 led January's sales charts. In fact, there was no change at the top over December. Ubisoft's Just Dance 3 again finished second at US retail, with Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim securing third place. Take-Two's NBA 2K12 emerged to edge out EA's Battlefield 3 for fourth and fifth best-selling games.

Hardware took an equally hard hit in January, falling 38 percent to $199.5 million. Though NPD does not release its sales figures, Microsoft independently announced that its console was the best-selling of the bunch for the 13th month in a row, having shifted 270,000 units. Sony and Nintendo had not disclosed hardware sales figures as of press time.
