As previously promised, here's that gameplay footage of Kung Fu Strike: The Warrior's Rise, which is 7Sixty's Western, XBLA-targeted version of HurricaneX2. Flashy chop-socky on a large scale? Looks groovy to us.

Next Metal Gear Solid targeted for 'high-end consoles' and PC

22.02.2012 6:35   2 views   0 comments

Joystiq can exclusively reveal that the next Metal Gear Solid will feature intense zero-gravity chess, cybernetic nano-crocodiles, mirror universe machinations and a trash-compactor escape scene that will serve both as Star Wars homage and finger-wagging sermon on humanity's crushing impact on the environment. Well, provided the Joystiq staff are hired to work on the game.

Kojima Productions has unveiled an extensive list of available jobs, hinged on evolving the in-development Fox Engine and, more importantly, bringing the next game in the Byzantine franchise to life. According to the page introduction, Hideo Kojima and co. are on the hunt for engineers, artists, designers and a brand manager to handle "the latest Metal Gear Solid targeted for high-end consoles and PC."

If you think you can bolster the Fox Engine with new rendering tech, create "fantastic game content," or cultivate MGS "as a global mega-hit franchise in all regions," you should swing by the Game Developers Conference Career Pavilion between March 6 and March 9 and make yourself known.

We might nudge you out of the way as we deliver our own game concept, which we're tentatively calling "Metal 6ear Solid: Sublimation Synthesis." Don't you just love the sound of that, Kojima?

Activision promised Clan Ops would be available soon and delivered today, flipping the switch that lets clans take part in competitions for extra experience and prizes. While all Elite members can take part in Clan Ops, only premium members will be scored and ranked on their performance.

Sony Santa Monica (and more) helping with The Last Guardian

22.02.2012 4:30   2 views   0 comments
From: www.joystiq.com

Sony Senior VP Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed to Wired that Sony Santa Monica team members are contributing to The Last Guardian -- along with a few more. "Well, you know, it's not just Santa Monica," he says. "We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the U.S. and the U.K. so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice."

Progress on The Last Guardian may be slow right now, but Yoshida assures us the game is still coming. The departure of Fumito Ueda was exaggerated, he says, as the famed designer is still going to finish The Last Guardian on contract with Sony.

"At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it's making progress, but still not to the level -- it's playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch." But now, "the progress is slow," he says, and "sometimes the team has to go back and review things."

The Last Guardian is still planned for 2012, but there seems to be little certainty over that time frame. "There's a vision that we want to realize but it's very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process," Yoshida says.

Sony patents filed for Kinect-like PS Eye camera, backwards compatibility adapter

22.02.2012 3:30   2 views   0 comments
From: www.joystiq.com

A new patent suggests Sony is considering -- or considered at one time -- its own take on a 3D depth-sensing camera. The patent in question was filed by Dr. Richard Marks, the inventor of the PS Eye and PlayStation Move, back in October.

The filing calls for "a real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device" that players would move in front of and interact with. "Embodiments of the present invention provide real-time interactive gaming experiences for users. For example, users can interact with various computer-generated objects in real-time." That sounds awfully close to Kinect, doesn't it?

Another patent suggests Sony is also considering a separate set of hardware that would allow for better backwards compatibility. Rather than provide an on-board solution, this would plug into your game console and provide the hardware needed to properly run an older game. (Sound familiar?) Patents are quite a few steps removed from reality, but they might just give us a glimpse at how we might play our games in the future, whether they're new or old.

Sony's Rohde: proprietary Vita cards 'completely necessary' to combat piracy

22.02.2012 1:45   3 views   0 comments
From: www.joystiq.com

Sony's Senior VP of its Worldwide Studios organization, Scott Rohde, tells Gamasutra that long software droughts, as experienced by the PSP, won't be the case with Vita.

"This time around, we started planning for development of [Vita] about three years ago, in terms of developing for the software, and how we were going to be able to transition," Rohde says. "I think that there were too many droughts of killer titles [for PSP]. There were too many long droughts, and I think we recognized that. And we've put a serious investment into our long-term PS Vita plans, so there's a lot of stuff in the works."

Of course, lack of software wasn't the only reason the PSP didn't see the success here it did in Japan -- piracy and the ineffective measures to protect the UMD format from it played a large part. Rohde says it was one of the first concerns, and one that he thinks Sony has addressed. "We needed to have something that would combat piracy from day one, and that's why the cards that you can purchase for the games are in their own proprietary format. And these days, so many people say the word 'proprietary' is a bad word, but it's something that we felt was completely necessary to make sure that people could not pirate these games. I mean, it's a custom security solution on each one of these cartridges. That is something that we are confident will protect us from piracy for the long term."

These topics are just a few in the massive interview with Rohde. Hit up the source link below to read the rest.

From: www.joystiq.com

The Simpsons are going to your phone! Again! Cnet reports that EA is planning to release a free-to-play Simpsons game called The Simpsons: Tapped Out. The free iOS game focuses on rebuilding Springfield after Homer blows it up. Unlockable characters (voiced by the show's actors) will give you quests as you work on your version of the city.

Of course, your progress will be limited every day, unless you purchase virtual currency, in the denomination of "donuts." You'll also be able to find them in town.

Tapped Out is due on iOS in the next few weeks. An Android version will follow a few months later.

UK Game store won't sell Ubisoft Vita titles at launch

22.02.2012 0:15   3 views   0 comments
From: www.joystiq.com

European retailer Game won't sell any Ubisoft Vita launch titles tonight during the midnight launch of the Vita, even though it is stocking titles from all other major publishers, including EA, Namco Bandai, Capcom, Codemasters and Sega. Game said it will not stock Lumines Electronic Symphony, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Rayman Origins, Asphalt Injection or Dungeon Hunter Alliance, according to a statement picked up by VG24/7.

Neither Game nor Ubisoft provided a specific reason for the shaft. Recently, Game has hit financial trouble and has closed numerous stores, laid off 46 employees from its corporate offices and is looking to sell its international arm.

Mass Effect 3 DLC 'From Ashes' drifts down to Xbox Marketplace

21.02.2012 23:18   3 views   0 comments
From: www.joystiq.com

BioWare has let slip a batch of Mass Effect 3 DLC on the Xbox Marketplace, titled From Ashes. This is presumably the same DLC as the rumored "From Dust" installment, which at least one GameStop customer may now need to get a refund for. Dust and ashes are two very different things, after all, but we bet any name switching came to avoid possible confusion with 2011's From Dust (if it wasn't a GameStop typo to begin with).

From Ashes will cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Mass Effect 2 included the squad member Zaeed as free DLC in new copies, and From Ashes could very well be a new iteration of this format.

For a brief description of the DLC (now with 100 percent more spoilers!) read on:

You'll also get an exclusive, pre-order only PS3 theme (above), so people will have a good idea of what you're about to play, or what you just played, when you're in the XMB.

Persona 4 fighter officially coming stateside this summer

21.02.2012 22:45   3 views   0 comments

The mystery of that spooky teaser email has been definitively solved. Atlus announced plans to localize Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena for PS3 and Xbox 360, under the title Persona 4 Arena, which we won't have to look up every time we write about it.

Developed by Arc System Works, the fighter features battles between Persona 3 and 4 characters in high-resolution 2D, and will be delivered to North America this summer. So if you were planning to summon a demon to bring this to you -- or import a copy -- you can cancel plans for those extreme measures.

One-year Xbox Live Gold memberships are $36 right now on Amazon, down 40 percent from the standard price of $60. Three-month subscriptions are 23 percent off, for $19.16 now as well.

Newegg is matching Amazon's deal on 12-month memberships, offering up to five per customer at $36 a pop. Not that you have to buy five but, really, if you're going to buy Gold today, it might as well be for half a decade at 40 percent off.
